Dentures Q & A

What are Dentures?

Dentures are false teeth that are made specifically for each patient to be worn throughout the day and removed while sleeping. Dentures can be made to cover just one or a few teeth (a partial denture), or all of your upper or lower teeth (a full denture plate).

What are Dentures Made Of?

Dentures are made to look like real teeth and gums, and such two different materials are used in the construction of dentures. The gum portion is usually made of a colored acrylic material to blend in with the rest of your gums. The teeth are made of a synthetic resin material strong enough to handle the function of chewing while remaining relatively clean with daily care. Sometimes metal wires or rods will be used to maintain the shape of dentures.

How Do Dentures Feel?

Dentures are fake teeth so they will never truly feel normal. However, modern technology has made great advances in the construction of dentures, both in form and functionality. Dentures are designed to fit individual patients, providing a more comfortable and secure fit. Be wary of hot foods, hot liquids, and bones when eating and drinking with dentures. Since dentures are false teeth, they do not have the same sensitivity of real teeth when dealing with temperatures and hard objects.

How Do I Care For My Dentures?

Daily maintenance is a crucial part of wearing dentures and includes:

  • Cleaning and rinsing after every meal
  • Handling dentures carefully to avoid bending or breaking them
  • Brushing your dentures at least once a day to maintain color and remove plaque
  • Cleaning off denture adhesive, if used
  • Brushing and rinsing your gums, tongue, and roof of mouth after removing dentures to maintain good dental hygiene
  • Soaking your dentures in water or a cleaning solution to help maintain their shape, and keep them free of dirt and bacteria whenever they aren't being worn

What if My Dentures Stop Fitting Correctly?

Dentures will often require some form of refitting from daily wear and tear. Other factors in your mouth, such as gum healing, may also contribute to the need for refitting. Contact at Sunrise Dental to make sure your dentures stay snug and comfortable.
